TITLE: Assistant Librarian, Part-Time, 28 hours a week
DEPARTMENT: Parks & Recreation
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: To perform library work involving respectful, courteous service to patrons in an efficient, professional, and timely manner. Works under the direction of the City Librarian.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Keeps current on library materials and technology through websites and book review databases.
- Recommends books and materials to patrons.
- Answers and assists patrons with computer and reference questions and locating books and other materials for research and school projects.
- Checks books in and out.
- Places requests and notifies patrons when requested items are available.
- Shelves books.
- Processes items brought in by the courier.
- Runs and pulls the list of requested items daily.
- Opens new borrower accounts for library cards.
- Reads shelves to make sure books and materials are in the correct order.
- Rearranges shelves as needed or as directed by the City Librarian.
- Enforces library policies and rules for the safety and comfort of patrons and staff.
- Maintains the circulation area in a neat, orderly, and organized fashion.
- Keeps the public information areas clean, clutter-free, organized, and up-to-date.
- Regular in-office attendance
- Performs other related duties as directed or required by the City Librarian.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of library operations.
- Knowledge of business mathematics, English, spelling, and punctuation.
- Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment, including Word and Excel.
- Ability to assist the public with reference services, including internet searches.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely and to work with library patrons.
- Ability to maintain office files and records.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to operate a personal computer.
- Skill in the use of internet programs.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school graduation or GED required a minimum of two years of experience in clerical/library services. (A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATION:
- Valid Florida Driver's License
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:
- Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrective lenses)
- Acceptable hearing (with or without a hearing aid)
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
- Ability to sit and stand for long periods.
- Ability to bend, stoop, and lift.
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.
